John Burroughs High School is a comprehensive high school. Originally, Burroughs High was a junior high school from 1928-1947. It became a high school in 1948. The high school has a population of approximately 2780 students in grades 9 through 12, 102 faculty members, 5 administrators, and a support staff of 69, including 5 counselors, secretaries, nurses, teaching assistants, custodians, cafeteria workers, and campus supervisors.

The official four-year graduation rate for Burroughs students is 97.5%. About 68% of John Burroughs students continue on to a post-secondary education. The school offers 17 Advanced Placement courses and will expand the offerings to better prepare our students for the collegiate experience.

The ethnic composition of the students closely resembles the community at large: 42% Anglo, 42% Latino, 9% Asian/Filipino, 5% Multi-Racial and 2% African-American. About 6% of the students are English Language Learners (ELL), which is much below the county average. Of 116 Limited English Proficient students, 35 were redesignated in 2008-09.

John Burroughs High School provides several unique educational programs. During the 2003-04 school year the Freshman Village was inaugurated on the second floor of the new administration building. Roughly 22 classrooms will comprise the village where ninth graders will take 80% of their classes. Burroughs High features a strong multi-media communication arts program which offers broadcast journalism, video-production, photography, journalism, screenwriting, and web page design.
