An African proverb states "It takes a village to raise a child." At Robert Louis Stevenson Elementary School, we believe "It takes a community to teach a child." Every student at Stevenson is surrounded by teachers, support staff, parents, and community members who strive for student success. Located in the City of Burbank's Media District, Stevenson serves students in kindergarten through fifth grade. As one of the smaller schools within the Burbank Unified School District (BUSD), we have a strong home-school connection, active Parent Teacher Association (PTA), and Families for Stevenson (FFS) Booster Association.

Drawing from a culturally and economically diverse community, our population consists of 26% Hispanic, 6% Asian, 4% Filipino, 2% African-American, and 45% Caucasian. In addition, 27% of our students speak a language other than English and 12% are designated as English Learners (EL). Over 23 languages are represented. This diversity within our school provides students the opportunity to respect and embrace our cultural diversity.

At Stevenson School we are committed to delivering a quality educational program to all students. Exemplary teaching occurs on a daily basis which focuses on a standards-aligned curriculum. High expectations for student achievement and behavior are evident throughout the school. Morning routines include students reciting the Peace Builders Pledge, reviewing school rules, and discussing learning goals. All Stevenson students are continually challenged to meet grade level standards through the use of data driven instruction, grouping strategies, and dedicated teachers to insure student growth.

Students and teachers benefit from programs which support the development of the whole child. The core curriculum is supported and enhanced with special programs that integrate the arts, technology, and physical education. Our school-wide garden provides an "outdoor classroom" for hands-on science instruction, as well as developing an appreciation for the environment. All K-5 classrooms, including our Severely Handicapped students, have a garden spot in which to continue their exploration of nature. Stevenson was named a California Distinguished School in 2006.

Our students build strong academic and social skills within a safe and caring community. Students leave Stevenson Elementary School with the ability to be proud, confident, successful scholars ready for the next step in their educational careers.

Sincerely,

Debbie Ginnetti
Principal
